There are great things occurring around the world at the moment aren’t there, and not many of them are for our good, or anyone else’s good for that matter, though we of course will be the ultimate sufferers, whoever causes it all in the first place?
A major cause for concern is the war going on in Ukraine, involving a lunatic, power-hungry leader on one side and a population of very tough individuals, who have been through it all many times before, due to their unfortunate geographical position.
(Would anyone want to find themselves situated as a next-door neighbor of the Russians?). And the whole thing has been enlarged into a much more dangerous situation because many of the big powers have seen fit to ‘join in’ as well.
Because a few very powerful people have most likely seen an opportunity for an increase in their already vast wealth. I include the arms manufacturers and suppliers here, who have had a comparatively lean spell in recent years, due to the lack of any serious ‘dust-ups’ somewhere - they’ll have been doing very well during the past year!
There are also undoubtedly a few financial moguls, whose names we never hear and whose faces we never see, people who really pull the strings of power around the world, and to them, the occasional war is very good for business, whatever line they are in.
Wars accelerate the design and development of all sorts of things, far from the actual armaments involved, (like one of the major medical discoveries during the last War - penicillin!). Many other businesses prospered too… radio and radar, jet aircraft, modern submarines, and the improved quality and reduced price of many food items, to name but a few.
So, to these people, a new war is a very good investment, though now an investment that is much more risky, because of a little thing called atomic energy.
If that gets used indiscriminately, it could be the death of us all, (shades of ‘On the Beach’, the 1959 film!). And unfortunately, there’s one man who might just do it!
On top of the Ukraine problem, we also have serious fighting going on in Sudan and other parts of Africa, Afghanistan, China threatening Taiwan and America, and any other country that doesn’t agree entirely with their views, political unrest everywhere around the world, with even Australia not able to create an atmosphere of total peace within her borders, due to the “yes/no” vote, increased prices and interest rates and a severe lack of accommodation at reasonable prices, not to mention a health service that is close to falling apart.
I sometimes wonder if it can possibly get worse and time and time again - it does!
But those are just the man-made problems we are having to face. Nature herself seems to be dead against us too - and who could blame her when one realizes what we have done to her for the past million years or so?
She is now getting her revenge by warming things up, melting the earth’s icecaps, causing all sorts of weather disasters from storms, rain, snow, and wildfires, and helping things along with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, overheated seas, and this year’s special, carbon dioxide, (CO2).
That last one is a lulu too, although the amount of CO2 in the air we breathe is a fairly steady 0.03%, it is according to some scientists having an enormous effect on all of us. It is warming the seas causing the death of coral reefs and many marine entities, while everywhere else too rains are heavier, snows are deeper, air temperatures are rising and new diseases are popping up, like Covid.
So that tiny 0.03% of this very natural gas, which every living plant requires to live because it is the plant world equivalent of our oxygen, is now public enemy number one.
I’m not going to say any more about this because there are too many, very diverse ideas as to what the actual situation is, and as a mere human being my knowledge is very limited!
And that is about all I can say really, I know there are thousands of other important problems we could worry about, but this blog is going to start sounding miserable if I carry on.
I’ll try to make sure my next blog is on a happier note, I promise!
