A funeral needn’t be a sad occasion. It should be a time of reflection and celebration of someone’s life. We’ll laugh, and no doubt cry, as we remember our loved one’s life and we’ll also be reminded that just as each of us thinks of ourselves as being unique, we are also very much one.

Is it just me or have we now got a generation (or two!) absolutely besotted with their mobile phones?...
I like to go for a daily ‘mindful/exercise walk’ pretty much every day. It’s along the seafront here in Hervey Bay but in and out of a semi-forested area along the shoreline so plenty of birds, greenery & of course the blue waters of ‘the bay’!
I tried listening to some ‘chill music’ via earbuds once but soon gave that up (next day!) as it took away the ‘natural/mindful’ part of my daily walk.

“Don’t cry for me ok!… “ the very last words my mum Lucy said before she passed away peacefully later that evening, the same day we had visited her in hospital in Newcastle.
But it’s hard not to cry isn’t it? – The passing of any family member or close friend is especially hard.
Like just recently. My much-loved father in-law Jack Browne – yes my wife Kaye’s dad – had recently turned 96. He was in an aged-care home having finally gotten to the stage where it was just a bit easier for him on a daily basis.
But not just because he was ‘older’… In fact just a year earlier he had been on his second ocean cruise with some of his mates from the ‘Over 60’s Club’… most of the members being in their 80’s!

So how can we enjoy life more?
If your life reads like a TV script - with a perfect partner, angelic kids, spotless house, a 5-minute commute without any traffic jams to the perfect job alongside caring and empathic workmates and a boss who gives you bonuses to pay for your regular exotic holidays… then get back to the fairy-tale you came from!
The rest of us don’t have lives like that and the more we try to grab onto that kind of a fantasy the worse we feel.

My wife of 30+years, Kaye sure does! Particularly as 10 years prior when we first started going out together, I was showing her how to play guitar.
Ok – I’m not a professional but I do know enough about music to explain the strings on a guitar. E-A-D-G-B-E… So you might be saying… “what’s the big deal?”

You could almost hear a pin drop as the announcer walked up to the microphone and began to speak in hushed, almost reverential tones – ‘Ladies and gentlemen' he intoned in that rather theatrical way they so often do..., 'Welcome to the finals of the 'Decade of Transformation Awards'.

Except for very short periods between losing one and getting another, my wife Jacqui and I have never been without pets.
They unfailingly became true members of our family and we always weep when one of them either dies or needs to be euthanized due to old age and ill health.
Somehow, home just wouldn’t be home without one or two of our little mates, joining in the fun of life, with us.

Eighty years ago, when I was very young, Christmas was a very different animal to the festival we enjoy today.
For a start, there was the overriding effect of a World War going on, something which meant many of the favourites everyone had enjoyed, some of them for centuries, were suddenly not available any longer…
Like the orange in the bottom of the Christmas stocking or the brightly lit decorations in the shops, invitations to Nazi bombers to come and kill us all!

Kyushu Japan... A mythical mysterious wonderland of sights that exceeded my wildest dreams!
This relatively unknown, to Australians, destination is the south westernmost of Japan’s main islands. It has a mostly subtropical climate so not as cool as Hokkaido in winter. With active volcanoes, beaches, and natural hot springs it is a destination to put on your list.
