What is, in your opinion, being successful mean?

How do you know when you are successful?

Who in your opinion is successful? Is it a friend, relative, a Movie or TV Star, Bill Gates, or someone else and why?

Have a think for a moment, what is your definition of success?

A friend posed this very question to a group at a self improvement lecture.

The group all wrote down their own definition of success in life and were asked to read them out loud.

There were the usual answers of, having $2m dollars, having $20m dollars, owning my own business, having a passive income for life. There were the ones also that defined success as being able to own their own home, travel around the world or simply owning a boat.

Definitions varied depending on own our own values of what we wanted out of life.

After about 20mins to ½ hour my friend asked the same group, what would you like to be remembered for? What do you want written on your tombstone or read out at your funeral?

The answers were read out by the group, and all had a common theme. He/she was a good worker and volunteer for the community and gave a lot of time to others. He was a good father and family man. He / she always had time to help others and a great friend to many.

When they had all read out their similar answers, my friend asked, ”Raise your hands those who answered that they wanted to be remembered for being rich”.

After all that was what we all defined success as. Interestingly, no one raised their hands!

We all fall for the trap of judging success by monetary values and wealth, when in fact our real definition of success is something vastly different.
